Sempervivum montanum

Mountain houseleek (Sempervivum montanum) is a fascinating plant native to the Alpine region. Its natural habitat includes rocky areas and scree slopes, and it can also be found on short-grass pastures at elevations ranging from 300 to 3,400 meters. In addition to its wild beauty, mountain houseleek is also commonly used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens or on dry stone walls.

Crassulaceae

with matt green rosettes

Mountain arnica belongs to the Crassulaceae family, also known as the succulent family. This perennial plant is characterized by its evergreen nature, meaning it stays green year-round and retains its color even during the cold winter months. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice countless characteristic matte-green rosettes that spread out in a star-shaped pattern. These rosettes range in diameter from 1 to 8 cm, giving the plant a unique appearance. Another distinctive feature of mountain arnica is the red-tipped leaves.

Frugal Alpine inhabitant

The fleshy leaves of mountain arnica have a special property: they can store water in their tissue cells. This unique ability makes mountain arnica an extremely resilient plant, able to withstand wind and weather while requiring very little water. These fleshy, water-storing leaves are perfectly adapted to the extreme weather conditions in the mountains, especially during prolonged dry periods.

Homemade mountain houseleek extract

For the production of our Alpine natural cosmetics, we use our own mountain arnica extract. This extract, made from the leaves, plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of our natural products.

The production of the mountain arnica extract requires skill and a fine sense of timing. The robust leaves are carefully hand-chopped, either fresh or frozen, depending on the season. This step ensures we capture the full power of the plant and release its valuable ingredients.

The chopped leaves are then placed in warmed rapeseed oil. During the extraction process, the mixture is stirred regularly to ensure optimal blending and extraction of the active compounds. Temperature monitoring is key to ensure that the ingredients are slowly and gently dissolved.

After filtering, the resulting extract is poured into well-sealed glass containers and stored cool until further processing. By using our self-made mountain arnica extract, we can ensure that our Alpine natural cosmetics not only contain natural ingredients, but also carry the pure strength of the mountains.

We are proud to offer you high-quality natural products that are made with love and care.
